Deepfakes and Elections: When AI Bends the Truth

Imagine watching a video of your favorite politician saying something shocking. You’re outraged – until someone explains: the video is fake. An AI created it. Welcome to the world of deepfakes.

What Are Deepfakes?

Deepfakes are convincingly real videos, images, or audio recordings created or manipulated by Artificial Intelligence. The technology has advanced so far that even experts can barely distinguish fake content from real.

The name combines „Deep Learning“ (a form of AI) and „Fake.“

Why Is This Dangerous for Democracy?

Democracy lives on informed citizens. When people can no longer tell what’s true and what’s fake, they can’t make good decisions – including at the ballot box.

The scale is alarming:

Before the 2025 German federal election, deepfake videos of politicians were documented and spread massively for the first time. According to a study, 70% of citizens cannot reliably identify deepfakes.

UNESCO warns: AI-powered disinformation is the greatest threat to democracies worldwide in 2026.

How to Spot Deepfakes – Practical Tips

Even as deepfakes improve, signs remain:

Watch for:

– Unnatural blinking or eye movement
– Blurry edges around faces and hair
– Inconsistent lighting or shadows
– Unnatural movements, especially mouth and teeth
– Audio not perfectly matching lip movement

The most important rule: With sensational content – check first, share later!

What Can You Do?

  1. Think critically: Question sensational content before believing it
  2. Check sources: Trust only reputable media and official sources
  3. Don’t share blindly: Verify first, then share
  4. Educate others: Inform family and friends about deepfakes
  5. Report: Report deepfakes to the platform and, if necessary, to police

Conclusion: Knowledge Protects

Deepfakes are real, they’re increasing – and they’re getting better. But knowledge is the best protection. Understanding how this technology works makes you less susceptible to manipulation.
